A princess in a small, poor country is not allowed by her father to cut off her longer and longer hair. He finds it "the most precious piece of jewelry for a woman." The long hair becomes a real burden and limits the freedom of movement of the princess. The hairs are put in two suitcases that a strong circus artist must carry.
Because of his stories about the exciting life outside the palace, the princess feels a bit lighter. When she is old enough to get married, the candidate husbands come to the so-called precious jewel in her suitcases. However, she opts for her own, freer life with the strong man who has been so close to her for some time. He cuts her hair and then she continues as a circus princess through life with him.
