Max and the Maximonsters is the world famous and classic picture book of Maurice Sendak.
The evening that Max is sent to bed without food, a forest grows in his room. The sea comes rolling up and Max goes to the island where the Maximonsters live. He is not afraid, he tames the Maximonsters by looking deep into their yellow eyes. The Maximonsters make him king and a wild party is celebrated. But Max still feels lonely.
The story shows how the child becomes the boss of his growing negative emotions through fantasy - in the form of a dream. The end is very satisfying. The illustrations, executed with pen, ink and watercolor, stand out because of the colors and the used hatching techniques. The translation is excellent. This picture book, crowned with the Caldecott medal, was first published in 1963.
