The two-year-old Jonas sees the sea for the first time and it seems to call “Come with me. Come here!” He takes a dive in the sea, but is saved by his mother just in time, followed by several passages his life, in which he wants to live underwater, until he, as an old man, finally fulfills his wish.
The picture book in oblong format is based on the eponymous, frequently award winning short animated film from 2015. As a layered structure, a new age phase of the protagonist The desire to stay in the sea is becoming increasingly stronger. The inventions to lift the border between land and water are amazing and go from very simple (an inverted old umbrella as a boat) to rather complicated (a submarine built up from washed ashore on the beach. The particularly beautiful illustrations on double pages give the atmosphere and space of the beach and the sea very intuitable again, the color blue in many shades o errands and contrasts between light and dark play an important role. It is very nice to see the house of Jonas grow on a dune. Beautiful picture book to discover something new every time.
