Dikkertje Dap, the character from this eponymous poem by Annie M.G. Schmidt.
Dikkertje Dap goes to Artis early in the morning at a quarter past seven with a long ladder to talk to the giraffe. First he gives the animal a lump. Then Dikkertje tells the animal about everything he has got new ("red boots for the rain") and what he learned (spell the first three letters of the alphabet and "almost count and draw beautiful dolls"). The animal is astonished by Dikkertje Daps news. Then the boy asks the animal if he can "sneak off his neck" for a moment, but adds: "Do you think the ground of Artis is very hard when I land?" The giraffe allows this, but does not answer the second question. The boy slides off the animal and then lands on the ground with a smack. Boemmm Aaauwww !!!! Finally, Dikkertje Dap thanks the animal and says that he will come back tomorrow, "with the ladder".
